We often get into circumstances that could make us feel insufficient or under prepared for real life, or otherwise depressed or dissatisfied. In such situations and all the time, it is necessary to be self-confident. According to the Oxford dictionary “confidence is the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something.” We can therefore deduce from this that self-confidence implies believing that we have abilities and that they can help us to achieve things or to overcome situations that we face daily.
Why you need to be self-confident
Being exposed to new things or pressure can sometimes make us feel like giving up. Once we overcome them it becomes clear that if we are often as prepared as we need to, we can overcome different challenges that come our way. God has blessed all of us with unique abilities to prepare us for the unique challenges we will face. Therefore, the first reason why you should be self-confident is that God has given you what you need to overcome these challenges.
Your uniqueness is an answer to an existing problem. Lacking self-confidence can prevent you from doing the things you are good at and hence prevent you from blessing many lives. The reverse is true. By exercising your gifts and believing that your abilities are a blessing for you and those around you, you will gain more self-confidence. Self-confidence enables you to do what you enjoy doing and to help people lacking confidence to exploit their potentials and have fun blessing lives. Let’s address some of the wrong mindsets about self-confidence:
Myths about self-confidence
1) Self-Confidence is inborn
Many people think that either you are born confident or you are not and hence operate way below their true potential using the excuse “I was born like this.” This is one of the most dangerous myths about self-confidence. A simple logical disproof of this myth is that at birth you don’t know your abilities, talk less of believing in them. Hence, you can’t be self-confident from birth by definition. Self-confidence can be developed and nurtured. Refuse to live below your real potential.
2) Self-Confidence is hard to build
Many are convinced that self-confidence is too hard to build and so do not even try to develop it. Self-confidence isn’t developed in one day but it is simple to develop. In real life, the best way to start is small, then you scale. You can build your self-confidence by doing little things consistently such as making positive affirmations, talking with your siblings or friends, and even choosing to answer questions hand in class. Consistency is the key. Start small and grow.
Tips on how to build self-confidence
1) Understand that life is a process with learning processes in it
Don’t be scared of failure because the only failure that is a failure is one from which you learn nothing. This is one of the most efficient ways of building self-confidence. Once you understand that making mistakes isn’t a problem but an opportunity to grow in different aspects, you become more likely to try other things irrespective of whether you are sure of getting the expected result or not.
2) Doing things step by step and learning from failures
Once you understand that life is a process with other processes nested in it, the next step is to learn from your experiences. One way I recommend doing this is using a step by step approach. When you go one step at a time, you give yourself enough time to assimilate concepts before moving to new ones hence developing confidence. On the other hand, handling too many things many at a time will be overwhelming and more difficult to assimilate causing you to fail; thus affecting your self-confidence. One step at a time works fine.
3) Doing more things that you enjoy to better understand your abilities
Try new things. If you are interested in something, try it. Don’t wait or hesitate. If you really want to do it, then do it. The more you do things, the better you understand your abilities and limits. This way, you will develop confidence based on your increased understanding of what you can do. Besides, it will be fun and enriching.
4) Attempt things that you find interesting, but that you do not feel comfortable doing
Are there certain things that you really wanted to do but for some strange reason you’ve never
started? For some, it’s dancing. Personally, I have always had much interest in sharing what I know with others but for years I didn’t do as much as I could have done because I did not try to talk with others more often. It is only after leaving high school that I found myself talking to larger crowds that I realized how much I like motivating and encouraging other. Give it a try. Identify one thing that you really want to do, which you’ve never tried and take an engagement with yourself to try it at least once every week. Once you leave your comfort zone you will be shocked at the great things you will do. This will definitely build your self-confidence.
5) Believe that God has given you abilities which you can use to bless the world and ask Him to give you the strength to exercise your talents daily
Your abilities come from God and He wants you to be a blessing to others. God loves man and one way by which He shows His love is by giving us abilities which will benefit one another. It is His will for us to be blessed. So, pull your strength from Him to operate efficiently in the gifts that He has given you.
